Females carrying eggs migrate to river estuaries or coastal areas with ideal salinity for hatching. After hatching, giant freshwater prawn larvae spend their initial life in brackish water before returning to freshwater as juveniles.

  • Part of the Food Chain: As an aquatic biota, giant freshwater prawns are an important food source for various predators, such as large fish, water birds, and even certain mammals. Their presence supports ecosystem balance by providing an energy source for higher trophic levels.
  • Water Quality Indicator: As a species that is quite sensitive to changes in water quality, the presence of a healthy giant freshwater prawn population is often an indicator that the waters are relatively clean and unpolluted. A drastic decline in giant freshwater prawn populations can indicate an environmental problem.
  • Bioturbator: As they move along the bottom of the waters in search of food, giant freshwater prawns can help "stir" up sediment. This process, known as bioturbation, helps aerate the bottom layers of the water and release nutrients trapped in the sediment.
