This type of eel is the most commonly found in its natural habitat, which is rice fields. It's no surprise that this type of eel is abundant in the market. The rice field eel has physical characteristics such as lighter-colored skin compared to other types, smaller eyes, a smaller overall size, and a body diameter-to-length ratio of 1:20.

As its name suggests, the rice field eel is able to survive better in water that contains a lot of mud, like in rice fields. This eel is commonly found on the islands of Java, Madura, and Bali.

Swamp Eel (Sybranchus bengalensis Mcclell)

While the rice field eel can be found in muddy soil, the swamp eel lives in a habitat with a lot of water and less mud. In its natural habitat, this eel has a longer and more slender body. This is because the water level in swamps is higher compared to rice fields.

The body of the swamp eel has a diameter-to-length ratio of 1:30. In addition to the different body proportions, the swamp eel also has a darker color than the rice field eel, larger eyes, and a larger size, with mature eels reaching a weight of 400 grams. It is also more resilient in areas with plenty of water and little mud.

River or Estuary Eel (Macrotema caligans Cant)

The river or estuary eel lives in river estuaries. Physically, this eel has a significant difference from the other two types.

Its physical characteristics include a round head, sharper teeth, more gill folds, mottled skin that resembles sand, and wider fins on the tail, similar to an electric eel. This eel can grow to a weight of up to 1 kg per individual.
