lautnusantara.comAquaculture is a vital sector in ensuring food security and improving community livelihoods. However, many fish farmers in Indonesia still face various challenges such as limited technical knowledge, lack of access to updated information, and difficulties adapting to climate and market changes. To address these issues, the government and related institutions have developed a practical, non-formal education approach known as the Farmer Field School (FFS) for aquaculture.

What is a Farmer Field School?
A Farmer Field School is a participatory, field-based learning method where fish farmers gain knowledge through hands-on practice, group discussions, and mentoring from experts. This approach emphasizes solving real-world problems in the field rather than theoretical classroom-based learning.

Objectives and Benefits of Farmer Field Schools

  1. Improved Knowledge and Skills
Farmers learn efficient aquaculture techniques, water quality management, disease prevention, and proper feeding strategies.

  2. Behavioral and Attitudinal Change
FFS encourages farmers to be more open to innovation and aware of the importance of sustainable farming practices.

  3. Community Empowerment
Group-based learning allows farmers to share experiences, build social networks, and strengthen economic cooperation.

  4. Promoting Independence
Rather than relying solely on instructions, farmers are trained to analyze problems and make decisions independently.

Case Study: Tilapia Farming FFS in West Java
A successful example is the tilapia farming field school in Sukabumi Regency. Over a 10-week training period, participants saw significant improvements in harvest yields, feed efficiency, and pond management. The program also boosted the participation of women in aquaculture activities.

Challenges in Implementation
Several challenges faced in implementing FFS include limited extension staff, insufficient training budgets, and the diverse educational backgrounds of participants. Therefore, collaboration among government, educational institutions, and private sectors is essential to expand the reach and effectiveness of these programs.
