lautnusantara.comThe Pompeii worm is a species of polychaete worm that lives around hydrothermal vents—openings on the ocean floor that release mineral-rich hot water. Although relatively small, typically reaching 10–13 cm in length, this worm possesses astonishing resilience.

Hydrothermal vents are among the most extreme environments on Earth. Here:

  • Extremely High Temperatures: The water emitted from vents can reach 80°C or more, while surrounding areas are much colder.

  • Extreme Pressure: The depth of the ocean creates pressures far beyond what most organisms can withstand.

  • Toxic Compounds: Vent water contains heavy metals and chemicals such as hydrogen sulfide, which are lethal to most other organisms.

Despite these harsh conditions, the Pompeii worm has evolved unique ways to cope. How can a worm of this size survive in such a seemingly inhospitable environment? The key lies in several remarkable adaptations:

Unique Thermoregulation System

The worm can “choose” the temperature along its body. Its tail, in contact with the hot vent water, absorbs extreme heat, while the head, protruding from the tube, encounters cooler water. This arrangement prevents the entire body from overheating.

One of the worm’s secrets is a layer of bacteria that grows along its back. These bacteria:

  • Distribute Heat: Acting like a natural armor, they help balance the worm’s body temperature.

  • Protect from Toxic Compounds: The bacteria help neutralize heavy metals and other toxic substances in vent water.

  • Contribute to Nutrition: It is believed that the worm also obtains some nutrients from the bacteria living on its body.

Molecular Adaptations

Proteins and enzymes in the Pompeii worm have evolved to remain stable even at extremely high temperatures. This adaptation inspires scientists exploring biotechnological applications, such as developing heat-resistant enzymes for industrial use.
