One of the most common parasites found in fish is a worm, such as anisakis. This worm can cause a disease in humans called anisakiasis, the symptoms of which include abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.

Risk Factors and Prevention

Parasite infections from fish can occur when consuming raw or undercooked fish, such as in sushi, sashimi, or ceviche.

To prevent parasitic infections from fish, there are several things you can do:

  • Choose fish from reputable sources. Fish farmed in controlled environments tend to have a lower risk of parasites.
  • Cook fish thoroughly. Cooking fish to an adequate temperature is the most effective way to kill parasites. Ensure the internal temperature of the fish reaches at least 63°C (145°F).
  • Freeze raw fish. Freezing fish at -20°C (-4°F) or lower for 7 days can kill most parasites.
  • Inspect carefully. When purchasing or preparing fish, check for small spots, lumps, or visible worms in the flesh.

Symptoms and Treatment
If you experience symptoms of stomach pain or digestive upset after consuming raw or undercooked fish, consult a doctor immediately. Early diagnosis is essential for proper treatment.
